The Mavai trademark
Mavai is a registered trademark of Michael Mannion in Switzerland (No. 856092). This page sets out how the name may be used by people who build on, write about or redistribute the Mavai open-source projects.
The code is open, the name is not
The projects published under github.com/mavai-org are licensed under the Apache License 2.0. That licence covers the code; it grants no permission to use the Mavai name, as its section 6 states. The name tells users that a piece of work comes from the Mavai project, and it can only keep doing that if it is used for that purpose.
Use that needs no permission
- Saying truthfully that your software works with, integrates or is built on a Mavai project, for example “tested with punit” or “baselines measured with baseltest”.
- Writing, teaching and speaking about Mavai, its method and its projects, in articles, courses, talks and reviews.
- Redistributing unmodified official releases under their original names.
- Linking to mavai.org or mavai.ch.
Use that needs permission
- Using Mavai in the name of a product, service, company, domain, repository, organisation or package that does not come from the Mavai project, including names of the form
mavai-something. - Distributing a modified version of a Mavai project under the Mavai name. Forks are welcome: give yours a name of its own, and say that it is based on the original.
- Suggesting that the Mavai project endorses, certifies or supports your product, service, training or report, for example “Mavai certified” or “official Mavai training”.
- Using a logo or visual identity that could be mistaken for Mavai’s.
Writing the name
Mavai is a name, not a generic word: “the Mavai method”, “Mavai tools”, never “a mavai” or “to mavai a service”. Probabilistic testing is the practice; Mavai is one source of it.
